APPLETON -- Filmore Wally Schroeder, 83, of Appleton died Tuesday at his home.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church and for one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home-Vaala Chapel in Appleton.

He was born on Jan. 30, 1924, in Montevideo, to Fred and Minnie (Ostlie) Schroeder. He graduated from Appleton High School in 1942. He worked at Miller Grocery in Appleton. From 1943 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army, in Armored Division 20 during World War II.

He married Clarice Flaten on Nov. 19, 1944, in Hopkinsville, Ky. After his service they moved to Appleton. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years. He retired in 1980.

He was a 60-year member of the American Legion, where he served with the honor guard for funerals and military events. He was a member of the Swift County Fair Board and the Appleton Golf Club. He was also a Pioneer Public Television volunteer. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was in the senior choir for several years and was also on the ushering committee.

He is survived by his wife; five children: Bonnie Kaster (and Doug Lind) of Maple Plain, Dennis Schroeder of Big Stone City, S.D., Dave (and Lavonne) Schroeder of Moorhead, Pat (and Terry) Swenson of Appleton, and Dan (and Michelle) Schroeder of Princeton; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother: Nordahl (and Wanda) Schroeder of DeRidder, La.; and two sisters: Dorothy Appelholm of River Falls, Wis., and Elenore (and Myron) Koosmann of Appleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Effie Schroeder; a sister; and four infant siblings.
