Volds runners-up in contest
SEATTLE -- Greg and Charity Vold of Glenwood finished as runners-up in the Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture contest recently at the American Farm Bureau Federation's annual meeting in Seattle, Wash.
The Volds advanced to the national competition after winning the Excellence in Agriculture contest at the Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers competition in November.
The Volds reside near Glenwood on their family dairy operation. They milk dairy cattle and grow corn, soybeans, alfalfa and rye. They maintain an open door policy to anyone interested in learning about their family farm. They also operate a family child-care facility on the farm. They care for 10 children, ranging in ages from two months to 10 years old.

ST. PAUL -- Membership in the Minnesota Grown program is one of the best deals in town and Minnesota growers are urged to sign up now. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture invites producers to join the more than 1,000 members who use the program to promote their locally grown farm products.
Minnesota Grown is open to farmers, ranchers, farmers' markets, community-supported agriculture farms, meat markets selling local meats, and local nurseries and garden centers.
A $20 annual fee gives members access to free merchandizing materials such as price cards, posters and stickers featuring the Minnesota Grown logo, and other tools designed to help differentiate their products from others that are not locally grown. Producers who also sell direct to the consumer may list their products in the directory for an additional $40.
Growers wishing to become a member can register and pay online at www.minnesotagrown.com , or call 651-201-6469 and leave a message with a complete mailing address to receive an application in the mail. The deadline to apply is March 1.
