Fernholz selected as '07 Willmar Junior Miss by placing 1st in four of six areas; Buer runner-up

WILLMAR -- Brianna Fernholz was selected as the 2007 Willmar Junior Miss during a program Friday at the Willmar Education and Arts Center.

Fernholz attends Willmar Senior High School. She is the daughter of Joe and Sandy Fernholz.

Laurie Buer was named runner-up.

The Junior Miss program emphasizes education by providing scholarship opportunities to outstanding college-bound high school girls.

The program is also intended to encourage them to become leaders in their communities.

The judging criteria is 25 percent on individual interviews, 20 percent scholastics, 25 percent talent, 15 percent fitness, and 15 percent self-expression.

Fernholz was ranked top in four of the six categories: talent, interview, fitness and self-expression. She performed a dance during the competition.

She is active in track at school, has been all-conference and has participated in the state track meet three years in a row. She also dances with Colleen's School of Dance and accompanies the youth choir at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Buer received the scholastic award and Liz Flann was given the spirit award. Alicia Alvarado and Meghan Reineke also participated in the event.

Fernholz will compete in the Minnesota Junior Miss competition April 5 in Apple Valley. She was sponsored by Gillis Ag.

Willmar has had a Junior Miss program since 1962 and it is currently sponsored by the Willmar Area Women of Today.
