WILLMAR -- A cut in a fiber optic line between Willmar and St. Cloud has knocked out 911 emergency telephone service in the southern half of Kandiyohi County, Sheriff Dan Hartog said Wednesday morning.

The sheriff's department was told about the problem after a Prinsburg firefighter called at 7:24 a.m. to say the telephone service was not working, said Hartog. The sheriff's department was then advised by the system that operates 911 that the cut had been made in the line between Willmar and St. Cloud, he said.

Hartog said his department paged all the fire departments in the county and recommended a firefighter stand by their stations in the event someone calls with an emergency situation. In the event of an emergency, they were to call the sheriff's dispatch by radio, he said.

Hartog said regular telephone service is continuing as far as he knows. The sheriff said he did not know when 911 service would resume.
