SUNBURG -- The Sunburg Fire Department was called to a grass fire north of Sunburg on County Road 1 shortly after midnight Friday.

According to Fire Chief Milt Tollefson, the fire was a controlled burn of grass, but the fire had been left unattended, which is a violation of the burning permit.

A Kandiyohi County sheriff's deputy saw the fire and called the dispatch center, which notified the Sunburg Fire Department.

Tollefson said the individual doing the burning had notified the Fire Department that he intended to burn grass on the property, which is enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program. Because the fire was left unattended and had the potential to travel and cause damage elsewhere, the fire was put out. Crews were on the scene for about 1½ hours.
