ATWATER -- The Atwater Fire Department responded a house fire after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday along the 400 block of North Garield Street.

Atwater Fire Chief Gerald Schwartz said the house sustained serious smoke damage, but the fire was confined to one room in the home. He said the fire started in a bedroom and is still being investigated.

No one was home at the time the fire started, but firefighters used thermal imaging goggles to save some other occupants in the home.

"All four cats we found survived," he said. "We saved all the cats."

The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the fire. Schwartz said a woman that lives in the home called 911 after finding it filled with smoke.
