According to New London Fire Chief Sig Holme, the residents were able to safely escape the home, at 19367 61st Street N.E., but a family dog died and a cat suffered smoke inhalation and was taken for veterinary treatment.

The department was paged to the fire around 3:30 p.m. and remained on the scene until around 6 p.m. The home sustained heavy smoke damage and a hole burned into the kitchen floor. The state fire marshal is investigating and the Red Cross was called to assist the family, Holme said.

NEW LONDON -- The New London Fire Department also responded to a call around 8:30 p.m. at Rambow Inc., 1000 Rambow Parkway. An alarm was triggered by pizza that burned in a pizza oven, Holme said. The department cleared the scene in about 15 minutes.
