Fireworks, vehicle fire trigger separate grass fires

LITCHFIELD -- Volunteer members of the Dassel Fire Department extinguished two grass fires on Saturday, one triggered by a vehicle fire and the other by fireworks.

A 26-year-old man could face charges for the first grass fire, which is believed to have been ignited by the fireworks he was using.

The Meeker County Sheriff's Office reported that the suspect had lit fireworks that started a grass fire at 12:41 p.m. Saturday at 28527 738th Avenue, Dassel. The Dassel Fire Department was called to extinguish the blaze.

The volunteer firefighters were summoned to another grass fire less than two hours later. Charles Scott Nemitz, 22, address not available, suffered minor burns to his hands when his 1994 Jeep Cherokee started on fire at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at 18364 County Highway 14, Darwin. He was a passenger in the vehicle, which was driven by Warren Lee Knacke, 41, address not available. The vehicle was destroyed by the fire, which spread to a grass ditch.
