MINNEAPOLIS -- A new Minneapolis gasoline station offers the state’s first chance to buy fuel with 15 percent corn-based ethanol.
The federal government has allowed the use of such fuels in model year 2001 and newer vehicles. Pumps at Penn Minnoco, 6001 Penn Ave S., also allow owners of flex fuel vehicles to use a blend with 30 percent ethanol.
Flex fuel vehicles also may use E85, which has up to 85 percent ethanol and is available at pumps across Minnesota.
Gasoline that contains ethanol costs less per gallon than normal gasoline, but studies show it also produces slightly lower mileage.
“Drivers of 2001 and newer vehicles can save some money at the pump and enjoy the benefits of higher octane for their vehicle engines,” said Brian Kletscher, Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association Board President. “Penn Minnoco gives drivers access to a renewable fuel that has passed vehicle performance tests and has been successfully driven more than 40 million miles by consumers in other parts of the United States.”

Selling the higher ethanol blend at Penn Minnoco pumps was made possible, in part, by a partnership of a coalition comprised of the American Lung Association in Minnesota, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Growth Energy, Minnesota Bio-Fuels Association and the Minnesota Corn Growers Association-Minnesota Corn Research and Promotion Council.
A ribbon cutting was planned for today at the station.
