ST. PAUL -- Five local representatives from the Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant will attend a conference on youth issues that includes an address by first lady Laura Bush.
The Helping America's Youth Regional Conference is set for Thursday and Friday at the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus. There were 300 invitations sent by the White House for the conference.
According to a news release, the five local representatives are Paul Carlson, the superintendent of the New London-Spicer School District; Debb Sheehan, the PACT 4 Families Collaborative director; Jill Bruns, Renville County Public Health director; Timothy Fischer, a Kandiyohi County sheriff's deputy; and Janice Madden, the project director for Supporting Healthy and Respectful Environments Grant, more commonly referred to as SHARE.
The local Safe Schools/Healthy Students grant representatives were nominated for invitation by the grant's federal project officer in Washington, D.C. According to the release, SHARE was nominated because the project has effectively helped America's youth.
The SHARE grant works with schools to provide safety modifications, early learning opportunities and other efforts toward making schools safer and preparing students for learning. Fourteen school districts and four counties are part of the local SHARE grant.
