PAYNESVILLE -- A 5-month-old toddler who suffered injuries in a crash Tuesday evening south of Paynesville has died after being taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.

Hailey Wendlandt and Alexa Lee, 4, were both taken to HCMC after the crash. The driver, Corey Wendlandt, 26, of Paynesville, was uninjured in the crash. According to a news release Thursday from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office, the office was notified Wednesday that Hailey Wendlandt had died.

The ages of Hailey Wendlandt and Lee were incorrectly reported by the Tribune Thursday due to an error in the accident report filed with the Sheriff's Office. Lee's last name was also reported incorrectly.

According to the accident report, Corey Wendlandt -- who is Hailey Wendlandt's father -- was driving a 2000 Dodge Dakota east on County Road 102 when he lost control on an icy patch and slid into a ditch. Both Hailey Wendlandt and Lee were taken to a hospital by Paynesville Ambulance and later transported to HCMC.

Randy Kveene, chief deputy for the Sheriff's Office, said Corey Wendlandt told deputies that the children were both wearing restraints when the crash occurred.

He went on to say that both children were receiving medical attention when deputies arrived on scene.

"At the time it was not apparent that it was critical," he said.

The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the incident. Kveene said when the investigation is complete it will be sent to the county attorney, who will consider any possible charges.

As of Thursday night, Lee was reported in satisfactory condition at HCMC. No further information was given on exactly how Hailey Wendlandt died.
