Flood warning in effect for west central Minnesota, watch for high water

WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until 6 p.m. today for Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Renville, Swift and Yellow Medicine counties.

WILLMAR - The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning until 6 p.m. today for Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Renville, Swift and Yellow Medicine counties.

The Weather Service says the slow-moving showers and thunderstorms have already produced as much as 1½ inches of rain in the area.

The runoff from the excessive rain will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, highways and underpasses and other low-lying areas. Areas that could experience flooding include Appleton, Benson, Granite Falls, Upper Sioux Agency, Madison, Montevideo, Olivia, Willmar, Big Stone National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Hassel, Lake Oliver, Norway Lake and Monson, Lac qui Parle and Sibley state parks.

Citizens are warned to not attempt to cross water-covered areas, on foot or in a vehicle.

According to the Weather Service, flood stage for the Minnesota River at Montevideo is 14 feet and the river is expected to crest around 14.3 feet by Thursday morning.
