MONTEVIDEO -- The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a flood warning on the Minnesota River for the Montevideo area into next week.

The warning extends along the upper Minnesota River and its tributaries and includes areas of Chippewa, Lac qui Parle, Renville and Yellow Medicine counties.

Precipitation is expected to continue into Saturday, and above normal temperatures will continue to speed up the melting of the snowpack.

One-fourth to one-half inch of rain is expected to fall in the basin through the afternoon and evening on Thursday.

Another band of rain is expected to push into the region on Friday as well. There is still uncertainty about the amount of precipitation that can be expected, and the path of the advancing band.

Warmer than normal temperatures with highs in the mid to upper 40's are expected into next week and will continue to speed the melting of the snowpack.

The Weather Service also urges that people be alert to the possibility of ice jams on waterways in the upper Minnesota River basin.
