Former Willmar man drowns while kayaking in N.H. river

HINSDALE, N.H. -- Thomas Howell, 57, of Hinsdale, N.H., and formerly of Willmar, died in a kayaking accident Thursday on the Connecticut River, according to a former family member and the Brattleboro (Vt.) Reformer newspaper.

The newspaper reported Howell was swimming alongside the kayak in the middle of the river when he went under. The medical examiner ruled drowning as the cause of death.

Howell grew up in Willmar and graduated from Willmar High School in 1973, according to Howell's former wife, Mary (Clark) Roe. He was the son of the late Leary and Virginia Howell.
