Class I is the largest class of rail. The classes are based on gross operating revenue of the company.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway operates terminals in Dilworth and in the Midway Yard in the Twin Cities. The Union Pacific and Canadian Pacific Rail each operate separate terminals in the Twin Cities as well.
