DANUBE -- Gerald "Jerry" Hein, 81, of Danube died Friday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Zion United Methodist Church in Danube. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Friday at the church for one hour prior to the service.
He was born Dec. 5, 1926 in Ceylon to Walter and Mabel (Hansen) Hein. He grew up in Ceylon, Dunnell and Hector where he attended country school, and Danube where he attended high school for one year. He then moved to California where he continued his high school education. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and, after his discharge, lived at Long Beach, Calif. He married Marilyn Manthei on May 29, 1958. They lived in Long Beach until 1979 when they moved to Danube. In California he was employed in sales and marketing and later for the Long Beach Park and Recreation Department. In Danube he was employed both driving and maintaining school buses and later did maintenance work for the City of Danube.
He is survived by his wife; sons: Bob (and Lori) Hein of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Curt (and Tracy) Hein of Willmar; five grandchildren; siblings: Kenneth (and Pat) Hein of Globe, Ariz., Bob Hein (and special friend Virginia Stay) of Arroyo Grande, Calif., Elizabeth (and Tom) Farrah of Henderson, Nev., and Elinor (and Ted) Douglas of St. George, Utah.
