Girl trapped under ice slab

GLENWOOD -- A 10-year-old Willmar girl was severely injured Monday afternoon after being pinned under a large slab of ice along the shore of Lake Minnewaska.

GLENWOOD -- A 10-year-old Willmar girl was severely injured Monday afternoon after being pinned under a large slab of ice along the shore of Lake Minnewaska.

The 10-year-old was playing near the Glenwood city beach around 1:35 p.m. when a slab of ice broke off from an ice heave that had built up around the lake and fell on her. According to a news release from the Glenwood Police Department, the girl was taken to Glacial Ridge Hospital and later air lifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

The ice slab was estimated to weigh 400 to 500 pounds.

The condition of the girl was unknown as of Monday night. Her name was not released.

The Pope County Sheriff's Office, Glacial Ridge Ambulance, Glenwood Fire Department and Minnesota State Patrol assisted.
