Girls Basketball: BBE rumbles past Paynesville

PAYNESVILLE -- Despite shooting only 28 percent from the field, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa upended Paynesville 60-35 in a non-conference girls basketball game Thursday.

The Jaguars (1-1) got 16 points and 11 rebounds from April Hansen, 11 points from Katie Gruber and nine points each from Emily Roelike, Amber Evenson and Missy Montbriand.

No one scored in double figures for Paynesville (1-1) with Kirsten Miller pacing the Bulldogs with seven points. JessiccaLee Klein grabbed eight rebounds as the Bulldogs shot 21 percent from the field.

The Bluejays already matched last season's win total when they went 1-20.

Andrea Westby recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Bluejays, which had nine players score in a balanced attack.

Jackie Wertish and Leah Miller both netted 11 points and Brittany Bailey followed with 10 for the Warriors. Miller also grabbed 10 rebounds and pocketed four steals.

After a 21-21 first half, the Cardinals (2-0) jumped out to a 10-point lead in the second half and kept the Jaguars about four points behind for the rest of the game.

Jordan Olerud scored 11 points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed nine rebounds for the Cardinals. Carolyn Smith recorded 12 points and Molly Madsen added nine.

Megan Groen turned in a game-high 21 points and led RCW with eight steals and seven rebounds.

The Blackjacks (2-0) took 23-16 lead at halftime, then ran with the Thunder Hawks as the teams combined for 71 points in the second half.

Dawson-Boyd made only 13-of-26 free throws, but sent Montevideo to the line just three times.

Heather Voss scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Blackjacks. Kelly Swenson added 11 points and seven boards.

Taylor Skoglund recorded a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds) to pace the Thunder Hawks. Brook Moseng added 13 points and Hannah Wenaas 10.
