Girls Basketball: Down by 16 points, KMS rallies to beat RCW, 56-50

KERKHOVEN -- After falling behind by as many as 16 points in the first half, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg tightened its defense for a 56-50 win over Renville County West in Camden North girls basketball action Thursday.

The Jaguars (2-2, 3-4) controlled most of the first half, but the Fighting Saints (2-1, 2-1) made a run to cut the lead to 32-23 at halftime.

KMS' defense held RCW to 18 points in the second half.

Esther Peterson led the Saints with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Patina Queenan added 13 points, including two 3-pointers, and Sarah Carlson dished out five assists.

Lizzie Ellingson paced a balanced RCW attack with 13 points. Megan Groen added 11 points, Kortney Mulder had 10 rebounds and Sally Smith had eight assists.

Ashley Alsum beat the buzzer to give MACCRAY (1-2, 1-5) its first win. Alsum's putback hit the rim and rolled in as the final horn sounded.

Ashley Beseman had 13 points and Alsum hooked seven rebounds to ignite the Wolverines, who trailed the entire game until the end.

Andrea Westby piled up 15 points and seven rebounds and Brianna Wubben added nine points and three steals to pace the Bluejays (1-4, 2-5).
