NEW LONDON -- New London-Spicer (20-7) opened the game with an 18-0 run and went on to a 57-48 win over Paynesivlle in the Section 5AA-North girls' basketball tournament Tuesday night.
The Wildcats will play the winner of St. Cloud Cathedral and Howard Lake-Waverly/Winsted at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Howard Lake.
Brittni Schmitz scored Paynesville's first basket at the nine-minute mark.
Only five players scored for the Wildcats (20-7), with Jenn Wendlandt leading the way with 18 points. Ellary Asche followed with 15 -- behind three 3-pointers -- Renae Henjum 12 and Cassidy Vogt 11. Henjum also piled up eight rebounds and four blocks.
Brittni Schmitz led Paynesville with 16 points, followed by Lynn Lieser with 14 and Brooke Schmitz with 11.

BBE's Katie Gruber scored more than half of her team's points, netting 31, but the Jaguars (11-16) couldn't overcome Maple Lake's 39-24 halftime lead.

Gruber, who also had eigh rebounds, made five of BBE's six 3-pointers and added eight rebounds. Tiffany Gruber followed with 11 points and April Hansen had 11 boards and six assists.
