BENSON -- Hastings pulled away in the last two minutes to beat Benson 56-51 for the championship of the Benson Invitational on Saturday.

MACCRAY beat Hancock 59-45 for third place.

Down by eight late in the game, the Braves rallied to tie the score at 47-all with two minutes left. But the Raiders repelled the rally at the free throw line, where they were 20 of 31 for the night.

Benson launched 23 treys. Nikki Linn (nine points) and Emily Jensen (16 points) each made three.

Jensen also had nine assists and four steals. Brittany Holm, 6-foot junior post, fought her way to nine points and eight rebounds. Kelly Jepma also had nine points. The Braves were 10 of 15 at the line.

MACCRAY senior center Hilary Groothuis netted 32 points -- two shy of the school record -- and tied a school record (set by Lynelle Dirksen in 2001) by grabbing 18 rebounds.

The Wolverines (1-1) outrebounded Hancock (0-2) 37-20 and owned a 29-19 lead at halftime. Tory Brouwer followed with 10 points while Ashley Beseman piled up six rebounds and five blocks.

Jenny Noordmans paced a balanced attack for Hancock with 11 points and six rebounds. Stacie Cunningham amassed seven steals.
