Girls Hockey: Four-goal third period lifts Hutch past Willmar

WILLMAR -- Hutchinson scored two goals in the first minute of the third period and went on to beat Willmar 7-4 in non-conference girls hockey on Tuesday night.

Laura Ranieri and Ellen Lenz scored 14 seconds apart to instantly expand a one-goal Tigers' lead after two periods to 5-2. The Cardinals did rally with power-play goals at 5:45 by Chelsey Bielhartz and again at 11:40 by Chelsey Wierschem that made it 5-4.

But sophomore forward Laura Carlson scored back-to-back goals starting at 13:16 to cap a hat trick and Hutchinson won going away.

Nineteen penalties were called, 10 on Willmar, in the Cardinals' home opener.

Freshmen Jennie Mattison and Erin Sheehan both scored for Willmar in the first period on fine individual moves.

Hutchinson outshot Willmar 31-25. Abby Schueller made 24 stops for Willmar.
