Girls Hockey: Late Fergus blitz trips Willmar

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals stayed with Fergus Falls for two periods before the Otters took over the girls hockey game in third period to claim a 7-3 Central Lakes Conference win Friday at the Civic Center arena.

Second-period goals by Erin Sheehan and Chelsey Beilhartz tied the game 3-3 heading to the third period.

The deadlock remained until Cristina Masten's second goal of the night open the floodgate at 5:05.

Willmar goalie Abigail Schueller was under heavy pressure all night and finished with 38 stops. Jeni Grugel had 15 saves at the opposite end.

Chelsey Wierschem, assisted by Taylor Sandberg and Ali Sing, put Willmar up 1-0 at 6:23 of the first, a lead that lasted eight seconds before the Otters answered on the first of two goals by Erika Magnuson.

Willmar hosts the St. Cloud Icebreakers on Tuesday in a Central Lakes Conference game.
