BURNSVILLE -- Benson advanced to the consolation finals of the state Class A girls tennis tournament, but lost to Staples-Motley 5-2 Thursday at Life Time Fitness.
The Braves, in their state tournament debut, beat Minnewaska 4-3 in the consolation semifinals earlier in the day.
Rochester Lourdes won its 10th straight Class A title with a 6-1 win over Mounds Park Academy, and Edina accomplished the same feat in Class AA with a 6-1 victory over Mahtomedi
Staples-Motley 5, Benson 2
Benson contested most matches, but Staples-Motley came away with the win.

The Braves picked up team points from 3-singles player Abby Fragodt, who beat Skye Coughlin 6-1, 6-1, and from the 3-doubles team of Lauren Alsaker and Chelsey Goff, who beat Lindsay Paskevitz and Liz Willgohs 6-2, 6-2. Fragodt won both of her matches Thursday.
The individual tournament begins today.

Minnewaska won all three doubles matches, including a three-set win for Sarah Faehnrich and Sherri Jergenson at 3-doubles, and Benson won the first three singles matches of the day, all in straight sets.

It set up the 1-singles match between Benson's Jill Hagestuen and Minnewaska's Kasie Rust.
When the 2-hour, 45-minute match was over, Hagestuen had won 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to lead the Braves to the consolation championship.
