Gladys Leindecker

BIRD ISLAND -- Gladys Leindecker, 97, of Olivia, formerly of Bird Island, died Thursday at the Olivia Healthcare Center.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bird Island United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Bird Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service in Bird Island. Memorials are preferred to Renville County Hospice.

She was born April 10, 1909, in Laurens, Iowa, to Cary and Ersie (Reed) Smith. The family moved to Bird Island when she was 5. She graduated from Bird Island High School and then attended normal training in Olivia. She taught country school in Renville County for a few years.
She married Hardin Leindecker on June 10, 1930, in Bird Island. She was the librarian in Bird Island for many years. They moved to Bradenton, Fla., in 1968. She moved to Fairview Place in Olivia in 1998. She had moved to the Olivia Healthcare Center this past May.
She was a member of the Eastern Star for 79 years and a member of the Bird Island United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children: Dohn "Woody" (and Kay) Leindecker of Olivia, Ruth (and Gus) Nigro of Allentown, Pa.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one sister and one brother.
