WILLMAR — After more than 25 years, the residents of Kandiyohi County District 5 will welcome a new county commissioner. Based on preliminary election results Tuesday night, Duane Anderson is leading to replace longtime Commissioner Harlan Madsen in the district that covers the southern half of the county.

The results are still preliminary as the state will still count absentee and mail ballots that arrive by Nov. 10 in the mail, as long as those ballots were postmarked by Nov. 3.

Anderson received 54.44 percent of the vote in the preliminary results for District 5, while John Cunningham received 45.47 percent of what has been counted thus far.

As of 11:47 p.m. Tuesday, the preliminary results showed challenger Steven Gardner up by 14 votes in District 2 against incumbent Commissioner Steve Ahmann, 49.91 percent to 49.43 percent of the votes counted thus far. The district is located in the east, southeast and near west sides of the city of Willmar, including the downtown district.

Roger Imdieke ran uncontested in District 3, which encompasses the northwestern quadrant of the county.
