NEW LONDON -- Gina Bruns and Wendy Toops finished 1-2, respectively, in all-around to help New London-Spicer beat Melrose 136.825-128.575 in the Wildcats' West Central Conference and season opener Thursday.
It was the first time NLS has beaten Melrose, which is having its worst season in many years in terms of meet scores.
Bruns placed second on bars (8.225) and tied for second on vault (8.95) en route to tally an all-around score of 33.875, just ahead of Toops' 33.85 total. Toops won the beam (8.85) and came in second on floor (8.95).
Jacki Imdieke (vault) and Alexa Score (floor) also won for the Wildcats.
