WILLMAR -- The youthful Willmar Cardinals showed big gains in a 138.075 to 114.6 loss to the Sauk Rapids Storm on Thursday at the Kennedy gym.
"We're not scoring high, but we're improving fast and that's exciting," said coach Larry Selchow. "I think we're on our way to breaking 120."
That pales to traditional Cardinal scores but Willmar is relying on a junior (vault winner Caitlin Cooreman) to lead a team composed otherwise mainly of eighth- and ninth-graders, plus seventh-grader Jessica Wanner, who made a debut that drew praise from her coach.
Freshmen Brooke Barrett and Bethany Pollock were sixth and seventh in all-around.
