DAWSON -- Harlowe Jerome Bergeland, 86, of Dawson, died Saturday at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson.

The sevice will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Community Bible Church in Montevideo. Burial will be in Terrace Lawn Memory Garden Cemetery in rural Montevideo

Visitation will from 4 to 7 p.m. today with a closing prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

He was born June 1, 1921, to Martin and Amanda (Anderson) Bergeland on the family farm in Hamlin Township, rural Dawson. He attended country school in District 28, and graduated from Dawson High School in 1939. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and served in the Philippines during World War II. He returned to Dawson to pursue farming.

He married Helen Bueide on Dec. 13, 1947. They farmed in the rural Dawson area. In 1979, they moved into Dawson and farmed until the fall of 2005. He was active in the local church, the Gideon's, Dawson Soybean Association, Land-O-Lakes Board, the local School Board, VFW, American Legion and 4-H.

He is survived by his wife; children: Carol (and Dick) Dugan of Livingston, Texas, Jerry (and Nancy) Bergeland of rural Madison, Connie (and Wallie) Hardie of Fairmount, N.D., Kirsten (and Stephen) Fong of Eagan, and Tim (and Heidi) Bergeland of Murdock; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and siblings: Orton (and Barbara) Bergeland, Ralph (and Anita) Bergeland, Mavis Larson, Luther (and Lois) Bergeland, James Bergeland, Helen (and Ray) Bennett, Martin (and Carol) Bergeland.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
