MADISON -- Harrol Collins, 88, of Madison died Tuesday at the Madison Lutheran Home.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in Madison. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery in Gary, S.D., with military honors by the Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts.

Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening, with a prayer service at 7, at the Zahrbock Funeral Home in Madison and before the service Saturday at the church.

He was born July 26, 1919, to Herbert and Inga Collins. He attended schools in District 66 of Deuel County and Gary, S.D. He served the United States Army from 1941 to 1945 in the 164th Infantry and the America Division. He was shipped overseas in 1942 and served in combat in Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons and Southern Philippines. He earned the Presidential Unit Citation with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Ribbon, and Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.

He married Eleanora Furness on Jan. 25, 1948, in Brandt, S.D. They lived near Brandt, Clear Lake and Canby. They moved in 1961 to Madison, where he worked for the city of Madison Street Department until his retirement in 1986. After he retired he helped at the Madison Country Club and was a volunteer driver for many.

He was a member of the Congregational Church of Madison, the American Legion for more than 62 years, the Cooties and a life member of the 164th Infantry Association. He was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving in many offices in both the local Post 1656 and in the district. He was district commander from 1986-1987.

He is survived by his wife; five children: Howard and Deb of Jacksonville, Fla., Lynelle and Duane Houle of Forest Lake, Terry and Janet of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., Jim of Appleton and Kim and Brian Severson of Canton, S.D.; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one sister: Orieth Ribstein of Sioux Falls, S.D.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
