APPLE VALLEY -- Mahad Hassan was first in the boys race at the Eagle Invitational Cross-Country Meet on Saturday in a time of 16:18.4 for 5,000 meters.
The Willmar senior had started the season ranked No. 1 in Class AA but fell to 11th in the second poll. An illness (food poisoning) just as fall practice got underway held him back in the early meets.
He finished 14 seconds ahead of runner-up Kemal Jarson of St. Paul Central.
Willmar finished fourth with junior Sadam Abdi also in the top 10, in ninth.
Eden Prairie dominated, winning each title by a wide margin. Eighth-grader Maria Hauger of Shakopee was the girls individual champion.
