Hearing delayed for another defendant in shooting incident

WILLMAR -- A hearing has been delayed until next month for a Willmar man charged for his alleged role in the attempted murder of a peace officer.

An omnibus hearing for Adrian Salinas, who is 19 but will turn 20 in a couple weeks, had been scheduled for Friday.

Assistant Kandiyohi County Attorney Connie Crowell had asked for an extension to allow more time for the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to complete the analysis of evidence gathered when Salinas and three other men were involved with an alleged home invasion Sept. 15 in Willmar that led to multiple shots being fired in a business and residential area.

One of the bullets struck a squad car where a Willmar police officer was sitting in. Other bullets struck an occupied home.

Salinas faces a single charge of aiding and abetting in the attempted murder of a police officer.

A similar extension was requested by the prosecution and the defense for Arcadio Salinas Jr., who is also charged with aiding and abetting in attempted murder.

That hearing was rescheduled for Jan. 24.

But in this case, the defense attorney for Adrian Salinas did not agree with the extension, according to Crowell.

Judge Donald Spilseth agreed to give the prosecution more time, but the length of the delay granted is shorter than was granted for his brother. The rescheduled omnibus hearing for Adrian Salinas was set for 10:15 a.m. Nov. 10.

A motion made by defense attorney Carter Greiner to lower the $750,000 bail for Salinas and place him on house arrest was denied by Spilseth.

Crowell argued that even though Adrian Salinas does not have a criminal history, he is charged with a serious crime of attempted murder in the first degree of a peace officer.

Because of ties Salinas has with Texas, and his past frequent trips there, Crowell said placing him on house arrest could put the "community at risk."

Besides Arcadio Salinas and Adrian Salinas, Leroy Diaz Evans, 26, and Jesus Trevino, 33, all of Willmar, are also charged in the shooting.

Bail for Arcadio Salinas and Trevino was set at $800,000.

Bail for Evans was set at $1.5 million.
