SPICER -- Herman Julius Hookom Jr., 84, of Spicer died Sunday at GlenOaks Care Center in New London.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Willmar. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

He was born July 10, 1922, in Spicer to Herman Julius Sr. and Ruth (Thompson) Hookom. He grew up in the Spicer area and attended District 98 and Willmar Senior High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. He served in the Luzon Battle and received a Bronze Star.

He married Dorothy June Nelson on Sept. 3, 1963, in Sisseton, S.D. They lived in the Willmar and New London-Spicer areas. He drove truck for local firms and also worked for various farmers in the area. Dorothy died in 2004.

He was a member of American Legion Post 167.

He is survived by his siblings: Quinton Hookom of Spicer, Harriet (and Lenny) Ainsworth of Homeland, Calif., Shirley Jones of Ronan, Mont., Gwen Friedeen of Spicer, Paul (and Sarah) Hookom, Lamar David (and Judy) Hookom of Sacred Heart, and James (and Carol) Hookom of Deer River.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters and one brother.
