Motorists on Minnesota Highway 9 between Hancock and Benson will be detoured beginning Tuesday when a resurfacing project begins.

The project encompasses about 12 miles of roadway from the Benson city limits to a mile north of the Pope and Stevens counties line, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be detoured on Stevens County Road 8 east of Hancock, Pope County Road 2 and Highway 29 while Highway 9 is closed between Hancock and Benson.

Due to favorable weather conditions, Duininck Bros. Inc., the prime contractor, is able to start and complete the project ahead of schedule. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-June, weather permitting.

The $3.3 million project includes milling and paving, replacing culverts and replacing an approach panel at the Chippewa River bridge in Benson.

A bypass lane will also be added to Highway 12 at Pope County Road 3 west of Benson. That work will take approximately one week and will require daytime lane closures.
