SPICER -- The 16th Annual Spicer Sunrise Lions Ice Derby saw more of some things and less than in others Feb. 4 at Green Lake's Saulsbury Beach.

Also that day, the Minnesota Waterfowl Association hosted its annual Wood Duck Day, which builds houses for nesting birds.

The Lions' annual winter fundraiser saw anglers bring in 35 fish, seven times the number registered last year. On the bottom side, approximately 300 people attended, down from 500 in 3005.

"It went pretty well. We weren't able to drive on the ice and some people didn't come because of that," said Dave Struck, the organization's second vice-president. "It was also cooler than we were used to."

The $100 first-place prize went to Ryan Norell of Detroit Lakes, with his 1.7-ounce perch. Brandon Quimby of Willmar took second and Shane Schuller, also of Willmar, was third.

More than 200 prizes, including raffles, were given away that day.

Wood Duck Day, which was held at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, promotes providing artificial habitat for birds, which will keep away predators and aid in successful hatches.

The Prairie Pothole chapter of the MWA promotes the event every year and provides the materials and helps people put the houses together. More than 40 houses were constructed during the first hour of the event Feb. 4.
