WILLMAR -- In a chain reaction crash, a Kerkhoven man was hit by his own car Wednesday as he stood outside it on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 12.

The State Patrol said Justin Lee Grothe, 32, had his 2004 Ford Ranger parked on the shoulder of Highway 12 as he stood outside it near 45th Street Northwest just outside of Willmar, clearing snow.

Around 4 p.m., 25-year-old Ruth Anabel Anariba, of Willmar, was driving a 2004 Chrysler Sebring east on the highway. The roads were snow and ice-covered, and Anariba lost control of her vehicle.

It slid into the Ford Ranger, pushing the Ford Ranger into Grothe.

Grothe was transported to Rice Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Anariba and her passenger, 4-year-old Boris Didier Perez, of Willmar, were not injured.
