WILLMAR -- Zebra mussel infestations are less than an hour's drive away, putting Kandiyohi County lakes at risk, warns the Green Lakes Property Owners' Association.
It is one of many local groups urging everyone with a concern for protecting the county's lakes to attend an open house and presentation on aquatic invasive species. It will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Willmar Community Center, across from Robbins Island. It is sponsored by the Minnesota Waters and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The open house will provide an opportunity to learn what citizens can do to stop the invasive species from reaching local waters, and see what the state is and is not doing to combat their spread.
The owners' association is also urging people to attend the presentation to let DNR, state and county officials know the local concerns about protecting area lakes from zebra mussels.
Green Lake is considered especially vulnerable, since it is a destination for so many boaters and anglers.

Zebra mussel infestations have been confirmed in waters as close as Lake L'Homme Dieu, the Alexandria Chain of Lakes, and at the Sartell Dam. Many other popular state waters, including Lake Mille Lacs, Prior Lake, and Pelican Lake in Ottertail County and the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers are also infested.
