DATELINE -- Irene Alverna Benson, 84 of Benson, died Thursday at her home in Benson.

The service will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

She was born April 20, 1922 in Swift Falls to Julius and Nicolena (Abramson) Steen. She grew up in the Swift falls area and attended school there until the 8th grade. As a young adult she went to live with her sister in Seattle, Wash., and worked at a defense plant spot welding bombs during the war.

On May 1, 1943, she married Sigrud Benson in Webster, S.D. They lived in Sisseton, S.D. before moving to Benson. She was a homemaker and also worked at the Benson Hospital in house keeping and later at Fingerhut. She was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls and Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson, where she was active with ladies circle.

She is survived by her children: Evelyn (and Robert) Benson of Stockton, Calif., and Randy Benson of Benson; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Gladys (and Henry) Olson of Minneapolis, Viola (and Charles) Clark of Benson, and Beatrice Erickson of Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1991; and four sisters, including one in infancy.
