MADISON -- James Edward Bjornson, 83, of Madison died Monday at the Madison Hospital.

The service will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Garfield Lutheran Church in rural Madison. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Arrangements are with Zahrbock Funeral Home in Madison.

He was born Oct. 31, 1923, in rural Madison to Ben and Josephine (Olson) Bjornson. The family moved to a farm north of the Garfield Church and he attended grade school at District 63 Garfield Township and graduated from Madison High School in 1942. He worked at Armour & Company in South St. Paul the winter of 1943, and was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He was stationed at Fort Ord, Calif., and Portland, Ore., before being sent to Okinawa in February 1945. He was wounded in action and received an medical discharge in October 1945. He bought a farm in Garfield Township.

He married Lois Rangaard on June 24, 1948. They farmed for 27 years, then retired due to ill health and moved into Madison.

He is survived by his wife; children: Bonnie (and John) Sasso, Barbara (and John) Searle, Robert (and Becky) Bjornson; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister: Mildred Shields.

He was preceded in death by one brother.
