Aug. 27, 1935 - March 6, 2006

STARBUCK -- Joel Marvin Barsness, 70, of rural Starbuck died Monday at the Swift County Hospital in Benson.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Zion Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck. Burial will be at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hoplin Funeral Home in Glenwood and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

He was born Aug. 27, 1935, in Glenwood to James and Mabel (Ronnei) Barsness. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1953, attended Concordia College for two years and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1957 with a degree in agriculture. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1957 and transferred to the Army National Guard, where he served until 1963. He farmed for his father.

He married Arlene Rita Sherlin Eliason on Sept. 12, 1972. They lived in Glenwood. He moved to Langhei Township and farmed.

He married Elaine Thompson. Elaine died in 2004.

He was a member of East Zion Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his stepdaughters: Tracy (and Jeff) Peper of Glenwood, Nancy (and Patrick) Forsyth of Grapevine, Texas; three grandchildren; and siblings: Lawrence (and Sharon) Barsness of Rochester and Barbara (and Cliff) Swedenburg of Mendota Heights.

He was preceded in death by his second wife and one brother.
