WILLMAR -- District Judge Jon Stafsholt has ordered that Miles David Edinburgh, 17, of Willmar be held at Prairie Lakes Youth Programs and ordered a certification study, to be completed within 30 days, to determine if the juvenile should be tried in adult court for the murder of Adam Kenneth Milton, 21, of Willmar.
The orders were made during Edinburgh's first appearance on a second-degree murder charge in Kandiyohi County District Court. His next court date was not immediately set.
According to the petition filed Tuesday against Edinburgh, he was a member of a group of teenagers and young adults who went to an apartment complex in northwest Willmar early Sunday morning. There was an altercation between Milton and Edinburgh, during which racial slurs were exchanged. Both are African American.
Witnesses say punches were thrown and Edinburgh ran from Milton, who caught him and they scuffled, during which the boy allegedly stabbed Milton. The 21-year-old Ridgewater College football player was stabbed twice in the chest.
Milton was attended to, first by the friends at the scene, then Willmar Police officers and then emergency medical personnel. According to the court files, Milton died at 1:44 a.m. Sunday at Rice Memorial Hospital.
