MONTEVIDEO - A Chippewa County jury has exonerated a Montevideo man accused of criminal sexual conduct involving a child.

The jury returned not guilty verdicts on Thursday to all four charges faced by Remedio Martinez, 45, following a one-day trial in District Court in Montevideo. Martinez had been charged in March with two first-degree and two second-degree charges of criminal sexual conduct.

He had posted a $30,000 bail bond following a March 29 hearing.

The criminal complaint alleged that he forced a female child under 13 years of age to perform oral sex on him and attempted intercourse with her as well as touched her on a number of occasions during a period of a few months. He had denied the accusations during a March 28 interview with a Montevideo police officer and maintained his innocence during court proceedings.
