WILLMAR — Justin Ask announced Wednesday he has filed for election to the Ward 3 seat on the Willmar City Council.

Ask is the lead pastor for Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.

"We immediately fell in love with this community," Ask said in a news release. "We love its diversity, its history, and beautiful lakes. I want to serve this community and work for its future."

Originally from Waseca, Ask came to Willmar to serve at Vinje. His wife, Seyward Ask, is an associate pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Spicer.

The couple are co-founders of a national nonprofit organization, Serve Boldly , that connects middle and high school youth with underresourced communities to provide opportunities.

Ask also serves on the board of directors for Green Lake Lutheran Ministries.

Ask is seeking the seat currently held by Fernando Alvarado, who is not seeking re-election to the City Council. Alvarado is running as the Democratic-endorsed candidate for the state Senate seat representing District 17. Rick Fagerlie is the other Ward 3 council member and has two more years on his current term.

Willmar's Ward 3 includes downtown Willmar and part of southeast Willmar.
