WILLMAR — The hand recount of the Kandiyohi County Board of Commissioners race in District 2 began shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the County Office Building in downtown Willmar.

Challenger Steven Gardner holds a 13-vote lead over incumbent Steve Ahmann, who requested the recount after the results were canvassed last week.

Election judges will hand count all of the ballots from District 2, which is completely within the city of Willmar. The precincts being counted are Ward 3 — Precincts 2 and 3 and Ward 4 — Precincts 1, 2 and 3. All totaled there were 2,876 ballots cast in the District 2 race.

Representatives from each campaign are allowed to watch the recount and challenge ballots they feel are being counted incorrectly.
