WILLMAR -- Jeffrey D. McMahan has been hired as the new human resources director for Kandiyohi County. He will begin the job March 20.
McMahan, who has 10 years of experience in public and private human resources venues, is currently working for a six-county community mental health agency in Michigan.
He has been hired to replace Marilyn Johnson, who is retiring next month.
The county received 40 applications for the job and seven individuals were interviewed. The interviews were conducted by a small committee made up of department heads and two county commissioners. The committee included County Commissioners Dean Shuck and Harlan Madsen; Public Health Director Ann Stehn; Community Corrections Director Deb West; and Larry Kleindl, who is currently working as the Family Services Director but will be taking over the job as county administrator sometime this year.
Even though Kleindl hasn't officially been hired yet by the County Board for his new job, he was involved in the process because the human resources director works closely with the county administrator.

Kleindl said McMahan's background and experience made him a good pick for the job. McMahan has also worked as an employee relations representative, a personnel trainer and training specialist. He served in the United States Air Force from 1979-1995. In his letter of application, McMahan said his wife is from Cosmos and they were eager to return to this community. The County Board did not have to take action hiring McMahan.
