WILLMAR -- Kandiyohi County has been nominated to be a Capital for a Day during Minnesota's Sesquicentennial next year.

Online voting is open through Nov. 26 to choose five temporary capitals to celebrate the 150th anniversary of statehood.

One capital will be chosen in five areas of the state as defined by their biomes, or climate and ecological classification.

Kandiyohi County is in the Prairie Grasslands biome, where more than 20 communities were nominated. Prairie Grasslands includes southwestern Minnesota and the western border of the state.

Other west central Minnesota communities nominated in that category include Fort Ridgely State Park, Milan, Montevideo/Lac qui Parle Mission, and Redwood County.

Other biomes include Coniferous Forest in the north central and northeast parts of the state, Deciduous Forest Zone through central Minnesota, Tallgrass Aspen Parklands in the northwest and Driftless Area in the southeast.

Winning communities will be recognized during Minnesota's Statehood Week in May 2008. Communities will work with the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission to plan activities and help raise awareness for that area. Activities could include visits by Sesquicentennial Commission members, tours of the town, picnics, recognizing Sesquicentennial grant winners or hosting civic engagement discussions.

To vote on the Internet, go to http://www.mn150years.org and click on "Vote for your Capital for a Day." Each person is allowed one vote in each biome.
