WILLMAR - A four-month-long construction project and detour is expected to begin Monday on Kandiyohi County Road 5 south of Willmar.
The project zone, which extends south from state Highway 23 to Roseland, will be closed to traffic during construction, the Kandiyohi County Public Works Department announced Wednesday.
Traffic will be detoured to state Highway 7, U.S. Highway 71 and Highway 23.
The $2 million project includes grading, culvert replacement and gravel base.
Construction on this portion of the project is expected to be completed by September. The bituminous overlay will take place next year, although a segment through Roseville will get the first layer of asphalt yet this year.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin dirt work this summer to reshape a bridge approach at the intersection of County Road 5 and state Highway 23.
In 2016, MnDOT will construct an overpass bridge that will take County Road 5 traffic over Highway 23.
The overpass project is in response to a higher-than-expected crash rate at the intersection.
