SANDSTONE -- Kathleen Ann "Kathy" Barsness, 59, of Sandstone, formerly of Belgrade, died Wednesday at her home, after a battle with cancer.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 28 at the East Central School gymnasium in Sandstone.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Jan. 27 at Grace Lutheran Church in Sandstone. Arrangements are with Hansen-Mankie Funeral Home in Sandstone. Memorials are preferred to Grace Lutheran Church, East Central School or the American Cancer Society.

She was born April 1, 1946, in Belgrade to Helmuth and Edna (Buhr) Plumhoff. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Belgrade High School She graduated from Dana College in Blair, Neb., with a degree in elementary education.

She married David Barsness on June 29, 1968 in Belgrade. They lived in Rockwell City, Iowa, and she taught third grade. They moved to Sandstone in 1970. She taught at East Central School for almost 25 years. She coordinated Red Cross swimming lessons for nine years and organized fund raising for American Field Service. They were AFS parents during the 1986-1987 school year.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Sandstone, sang in the choir, was organist, and served as a substitute organist at the United Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband; sons: Craig (and Tiffany), Mike (and Mary-Kay), Steve (and Pam); AFS son: Martin (and Mirjam) Weinmann; two grandchildren; her father and stepmother: Helmuth and Clara Plumhoff; and one sister: Karen (and Randy) Schock.

She was preceded in death by her mother; one brother and three infant siblings.
