KERKHOVEN - City Council members in Kerkhoven could appoint someone to complete the term of Mayor James Rothers at their May 8 council meeting.
Council members accepted the resignation of Rothers at their meeting Monday. They also agreed to appoint someone to complete the term rather than hold a special election to fill it, according to information from the city.
Rothers was elected in November to the two-year term. He submitted a letter of resignation after the April 10 council meeting. City Council members had rejected his request to rezone a commercial property he remodeled for residential use at the meeting.
Council members agreed to bring names to consider for appointment to the May 8 meeting, although they are not obligated to make an appointment that day. Council members have the option of appointing a council member or a member of the public to the position.
