WILLMAR -- A 22-year-old Willmar man was arrested pending formal charges today after allegedly slicing another man with a knife during a fight.

LeRoy Diaz Evans allegedly got into a physical altercation with another man around 5 p.m. Sunday at Regency East Estates, 1400 Lakeland Drive N.E. Evans allegedly took out a knife during the fight and cut the other man.

Police Sgt. Rick Kleinschmidt said Evans left the scene but was arrested by Renville County authorities shortly after 10 p.m.

Kleinschmidt said the man who was allegedly cut by Evans is dating Evans' ex-girlfriend. Evans' and his ex-girlfriend have a child together. Kleinschmidt said Evans was watching the child while his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend went shopping.

When the ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend attempted to get her child back from Evans, Evans' mother allegedly came out and started a fight with the ex-girlfriend. Evans and the boyfriend then allegedly started fighting, Kleinschmidt said. Sometime during the fight, Evans allegedly pulled out a knife, cutting the boyfriends hand and arm.

Evans then allegedly left in a vehicle which was later found at the Regency West Estates but Evans was not found, Kleinschmidt said. Later Sunday it was discovered that Evans had a girlfriend living in Olivia. Renville authorities were able to locate Evans at an Olivia residence and he was transported back to the Kandiyohi County Jail.

Evans is scheduled to be arraigned today on formal charges. Although Evans admitted to the fight with the man, he denied any knowledge of a knife, Kleinschmidt said.
